And to address an argument I keep having with my mother, I still don’t think military service (the kind John McCain boasts) makes a damn bit of difference in the effectiveness of a president. I agree that our soldiers make a huge sacrifice to our country that’s worthy of tremendous respect, but the military isn’t the only kind of public service that matters.
Obama skipped getting a job on Wall Street after graduating from Harvard so he could do community work in Chicago. Clinton used her law degree to help abused and neglected children and she has a long record of committed public service to people in need. In my mind, that kind of service is no worse than serving in the military.
